Why Okagbare Did Not Appear For The Women's 200M Race World Athletics Championship in Beijing
A hamstring injury prevented Nigerian sprint queen, Blessing Okagbare from competing at the women’s 200m race at the World Athletics Championship in Beijing.
After
a disappointing last finish at the finals of the women’s 100m, all
hopes of a medal for Blessing in Beijing were hinged on the 200m.
Okagbare, who was listed in the startlist of Heat 3, was however missing for the race. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released a statement revealing that she was injured during the pre-race warm-up.
“A hamstring injury during warm up on Wednesday prevented Blessing Okagbare from participating in the heats of the 200m,” the statement read.
“Okagbare,
who went for surgery shortly before the All Nigeria Athletics
Championships held in Warri, Delta State, was certified fit for the
World Championships. The injury probably re-occurred because of rounds
she did in the 100m.”
A report forwarded by the medical Team attached to the National Athletic team however, assures that Blessing should be able to compete in the All Africa Games Events coming up in 8 days time if properly rested.
