Wayne Rooney Sets Appearance Record For England National Soccer Team As An Outfield Player
Wayne Rooney has become England’s most-capped outfield player in history.
Rooney made his debut for England in a friendly against
Australia in 2003, and at the time was the youngest player in the nation’s
history to make his bow before Theo Walcott made his first international
appearance in 2006.
The United forward also holds the record for the most goals
scored for England (53) and the most appearances in competitive matches (70).
The England captain makes his 116th appearance for
England as their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign begins against Slovakia.
Rooney has moved one ahead of David Beckham, who played 115
games for the Three Lions while Peter Shilton, still holds the most appearance record at 125 caps for England.
The 30-year-old was given his record start against Slovakia
by new manager Sam Allardyce.
England won the match 0-1. Thanks to Lalana's late minute goal.
