Revealed! FIFA Has Been Accused Of Paying The Football Asociation Of Ireland €5m After Thierry Henry Handball That Stopped The Republic of Ireland From Progressing To The 2010 World Cup

  • As the FIFA Crisis deepen's, more and more revelation of the World Football Governing body's poor conducts are been made public by respectable individuals and organisations globally. These accusations range from Arms dealing, money laundering and kickbacks.
  • This time, the Football Association of Ireland chief executive, John Delaney, has confirmed that the body accepted a payment from FIFA after Thierry Henry’s handball in the 2010 World Cup qualifying play-offs ended their hopes of qualifying for the tournament in South Africa. The Football Association of Ireland later confirmed that the payment amounted to €5m (£3.67m) and Delaney claimed it was made so the organisation would not pursue legal action against Fifa.
  • The FIFA statement appeared to contradict some of what Delaney said: “On 18 November 2009, there was play-off match between France and the Republic of Ireland for a place in the 2010 World Cup finals. During the match, a handball by France’s Thierry Henry led indirectly to a goal against the Irish team. Ireland did not qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals.
  • Northern Ireland’s Jim Boyce, who retired as a FIFA vice-president last week, called for an investigation, saying:
  • I’m absolutely astounded. I have never heard anything as ridiculous in my life.
If a payment of $5m has been paid because of a handball and threatened legal action, then I hope a full investigation will be carried out into this and any other such arbitrary payments.
As it emerged that the Ireland players had no knowledge of the payment, amid calls for Delaney to explain why it was not revealed at the time, Kenny said he believed the FAI chief executive’s position remained “tenable”. The FAI last night released a detailed statement and bank documents to prove it had acted properly, also arguing it had suffered reputational damage after Blatter made light of an earlier meeting at a press conference.
