First Lad's Inspirational Speech During Launch Of Lornah Kiplagat Sports Apparel
Eight years ago, I watched with
great admiration as one lady defeated a competitive field to sensationally win
the IAAF World Cross Country Championships at the Mombasa Golf Club.
Since then, I have closely
followed the exploits of that lady, Lornah Kiplagat, as I knew she had a special
gift and indeed special talent.
From her stunning victories at
the 2007 and 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Udine, Italy and
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to her outstanding work at the High Altitude Training
Centre in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, I have followed Lornah’s successes with
admiration and great pride.
Last year, during my training
stint at the High Altitude Training in Iten, ahead of the London Marathon,
Lornah told me that she was designing a new sports clothing line, and indeed
showed me a sample of the apparel that I immediately fell in love with.
What attracted me to this apparel
is the fact that it is the first uniquely African brand. It’s a beautifully
made brand, and that it’s a brand for our women.
As a mother, and as a supporter
of the Beyond Zero campaign that stands for healthy living and better
lifestyles for our mothers and children, I was overjoyed that, finally, we have
a brand that resonates well with our daily lives and indeed with our campaign
for a better future for Kenya’s women.
It is important that we create a
community of people with healthy lifestyles, a population that is interested in
fitness, nutrition and general wellness.
I’m happy to learn that besides
producing sportswear, the ‘Lornah’ brand will also organize runs, have coaches,
personal trainers and other consultants to support the development of the brand
athletics in general.
It is also reassuring that
‘Lornah’ also plans to organize clinics and fora on health, fitness and
nutrition.
This makes the ‘Lornah’ brand
stand out from other brands and this is a step in the right direction.
I hope we can all join hands and
support Lornah Kiplagat on her landmark initiative.
Finally, I wish to invite Lornah
and all of you to join me for the Second First Lady’s Half Marathon next
weekend.
This will be an appropriate
opportunity to celebrate the launch of an African women’s sports brand while at
the same time creating a better future for our mothers and children.
